Enhancing Chinese Language Learning through Cultural Engagement: A Case Study of Chinese Teaching and Cultural Activities in London
Abstract
As Chinese language education continues to expand internationally, educators are increasingly exploring ways to integrate language instruction with cultural learning. This study examines how Chinese cultural activities can support Chinese language learning among secondary school students in the United Kingdom. The research is based on the author’s eight-month experience as a volunteer Chinese language teacher working with HSK 1 learners aged 14–16 in a London secondary school, alongside the organization of Chinese cultural events at Queen Mary University of London.
The study adopts a qualitative case-study approach and draws on classroom observations, teaching reflections, and feedback from participants in various cultural activities, including Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, rubbing art, Chinese knot making, lacquer fan painting, and Baduanjin (Eight-Section Brocade) exercises. These activities were designed to provide students with opportunities to engage with Chinese culture beyond the language classroom and to develop a deeper understanding of Chinese traditions and values.
The findings suggest that cultural activities can enhance students’ motivation to learn Chinese, increase classroom participation, and create meaningful contexts for language use. Students demonstrated greater interest in Chinese characters, vocabulary, and cultural expressions when language learning was connected to hands-on cultural experiences. The study also highlights several challenges, including differences in cultural background, limited instructional time, and varying levels of student engagement.
This paper argues that integrating cultural activities with language instruction contributes to a more holistic approach to international Chinese language education. The findings provide practical insights for teachers and volunteers working in multicultural educational settings and offer recommendations for strengthening the connection between language learning and cultural engagement in overseas Chinese education programs.
