The Future of Language Learning: AI-Powered Feedback in Drama Productions
Abstract
This study explores the integration of Yoodli, an AI-powered speech coaching tool, within a drama-based English learning context at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. While drama education has long been recognized as an effective pedagogical tool for enhancing fluency and confidence, the role of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in drama for second language learning remains an emerging area of research. This pilot study utilized Yoodli to provide students in the English Drama Club feedback on verbal delivery and body language during rehearsals. The club is facilitated by the English Language Centre (ELC) and aims to enhance students’ fluency and confidence in English via Drama productions and Role-Plays.
Adopting a qualitative approach, the study analyzed student reflections and semi-structured post-performance interviews to assess the impact of AI feedback combined with teacher feedback. Findings indicate that low-stakes feedback provided by Yoodli complemented by instructor guidance significantly reduced performance anxiety and heightened students’ self-awareness of their speaking skills. Students reported that the AI tool provided a “safe space” for iterative practice, which ultimately increased confidence during their live stage performances. These findings suggest that AI-powered coaching can effectively bridge the gap between individual practice and group rehearsal, offering a scalable model for the integration of technology into drama-based pedagogy whilst redefining traditional approaches to second language acquisition.
